Another thought. For my otl2html script I use these to mark text:
//blah blah blah// for italic
**blah blah blah** for bold
+++blah blah blah+++ for highlight
---blah blah blah--- for strikeout

otl2html allows them to be nested so you can do bold/italic/highlight:
//**+++Insane+++**//
