Hi ! 
just to throw in my 2 pennies: 

when i upgraded from vim 6.something to vim 7.1 (open vim, issue command
":" blank version return")

paths from old vim-versions were changed heavily!
(Debian etch).
It took me about two weeks to get back a partly functionally VO....
Under the hood i had to manipulate quite a few key files, 
please ask the pro's here for further info on that topic...
