Hi Steve

I use double semicolon. I can't remember who gave me the idea but it works 
fine for me. It's right under the little finger and if you're lazy like me, 
instead of typing it twice, just hold it down a little longer than normal and 
the keyboard repeat takes care of the second stroke, and you are out of 
insert mode and into normal without a stretch.

I included the following in my vimrc file:

imap ;; <esc>
