Actually, on my Cirque keyboard, "\" is on the same row as "," and only
4 keys away.  I'd have to hit it with my pinky instead of my ring
finger, but it's certainly no slower than ",".

However, the basic problem is that the placement of "\" is not uniform. 
On some keyboards, it's way up and to the left.  On some keyboards, it's
a shifted key.  On German keyboards, they hide it someplace that I never
could find.
